GIF to Video

Convert animated GIFs to MP4 or WebM video files for smaller sizes and better compatibility.

GIF to Video converts animated GIFs into MP4 or WebM for smaller files and better player compatibility. Drop an .gif (accept is image/gif; hint: Animated GIF files), pick Output Format (MP4 default) and FPS (5–30, default 15), then Convert to Video. A Performance Notice reminds you to keep the tab open while FFmpeg.wasm runs locally.

MP4 uses H.264 with yuv420p and +faststart for instant browser playback; WebM uses a realtime deadline for speed. Output keeps the GIF’s basename with the new extension, and the size badge usually shows a green reduction versus the source GIF.

How it works

FFmpeg.wasm loads on mount (core from jsDelivr). Args from buildGifToVideoArgs: -i input.gif -movflags +faststart -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf scale=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2,fps=N output.<fmt>, plus -deadline realtime -cpu-used 8 for WebM.

Forced even dimensions guarantee yuv420p compatibility. The Convert button stays disabled until isLoaded. Success toast: Video created as MP4! (or WEBM).

How to use

  1. Open GIF to Video and read the Performance Notice.
  2. Drop an animated .gif file (preview appears as an image).
  3. Wait for Loading Engine… until Convert to Video enables.
  4. Choose Output Format: MP4 (default) or WebM.
  5. Choose FPS (5–30; default 15 — GIF timing is re-sampled to this rate).
  6. Click Convert to Video and watch Processing… % + FFmpeg log.
  7. Play the result (Converted to MP4 + size badge).
  8. Download ({name}.mp4/.webm) or Start Over.

Tips

  • MP4 (H.264 + yuv420p + faststart) is the most compatible target for chats and the web.
  • FPS ≤ source GIF frame rate avoids duplicated frames; higher FPS will not add detail.
  • Width/height are forced even — odd GIF dimensions would break yuv420p.
  • Engine-load failure toasts about COOP/COEP headers if the WASM worker cannot start.

GIF to Video FAQ

Does the GIF leave my browser?

No — FFmpeg.wasm runs locally; nothing is uploaded.

Why is the button disabled?

Conversion waits on isLoaded (Loading Engine…) or is already running.

Can I convert a static GIF?

The accept filter allows any .gif; the tool is designed for animated GIFs (hint: Animated GIF files).

Which format should I pick?

MP4 for maximum compatibility; WebM for web-native playback with faster encode settings.

Why did the size change?

The badge compares source vs output MB — GIF’s 256-color palette usually makes video much smaller.
