Add Page Numbers
Automatically stamp sequential page numbers across a document.
Add Page Numbers stamps sequential numbering onto every page with a live preview of where the label will sit. Pick a preset style (Page 1 of 10, 1 / 10, plain numbers, custom format with {n} and {total}), choose one of nine positions, then set color, font size, and margin. Download comes out as numbered_{original}.pdf.
Numbering is ideal for draft packets, printed agendas, and legal bundles that must show page order. Everything runs in the browser with pdf-lib drawing Helvetica text — your file is not uploaded.
How it works
The preview pane renders the current page with PDF.js while the settings panel drives a debounced overlay of the number string. Format presets only change the template string; you can edit it freely (placeholders {n} for the page and {total} for page count).
On download, fresh PDF bytes are loaded, Helvetica is embedded, and each page gets drawText at the chosen anchor via getWatermarkPosition. Position defaults to Bottom Center; color defaults to dark gray for print readability.
How to use
- Open Add Page Numbers and drop or click your PDF.
- Confirm Loading PDF… completes and page 1 previews.
- Under Numbering Settings, pick a Format Style or type a custom template using {n} and {total}.
- Set Position (default Bottom Center), Color, Font Size (8–72pt, default 12), and Margin (0–200, default 40).
- Use Prev / Next to check first, middle, and last pages for collisions with existing footers.
- Click Download PDF (disabled if the format string is empty) and wait for Processing….
- Save numbered_{name}.pdf from your browser downloads.
- Re-open the file in a reader to verify numbering before you print or send.
Tips
- Bottom Center at 12pt is the safe default; increase margin if the page already has a footer band.
- Custom formats let you write prefix text around {n} without changing position.
- Numbering applies to every page in order — there is no start-at-N control in this version.
- Encrypted files fail at load; unlock first if the PDF is protected.
Add Page Numbers FAQ
Are files uploaded?
No. Numbering is drawn locally with pdf-lib; nothing is sent to a server.
Can I start numbering at a value other than 1?
Not in the current UI — numbering always starts at page 1 of the document.
What do {n} and {total} mean?
{n} is the current page number; {total} is the total page count. Presets are just filled-in templates.
Why is Download disabled?
The format string is empty. Choose a preset or type a custom format.
What is the output filename?
numbered_ plus the original name, for example numbered_agenda.pdf.
