PDF Metadata Editor

View and modify hidden PDF metadata (Title, Author, Subject).

PDF Metadata Editor exposes the hidden document information dictionary — Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer — so you can fix titles that show as file hashes, clear a stale Producer string, or stamp project tags before sharing. Values load from the file into a validated form; Save writes a new meta_edited_ download with pdf-lib.

A page-1 preview confirms you have the right document. Processing is entirely local: drop the PDF, edit fields, save. Empty fields are skipped on write, so blank out is not a clear operation in this version.

How it works

On upload, pdf-lib loads the file and reads getTitle, getAuthor, getSubject, getKeywords, getCreator, and getProducer into form defaults (keywords join as a comma-separated string). PDF.js renders page 1 beside the form.

Save builds updates only for trimmed non-empty fields, splits keywords on commas into an array, then save() → Blob → anchor download meta_edited_{filename}. Encrypted or corrupt loads fail with a toast instead of a partial edit.

How to use

  1. Open Edit PDF Metadata and drop or click a valid PDF.
  2. Wait for Extracting metadata... and the page-1 preview.
  3. Edit Title, Author, Subject, Keywords (comma separated), Creator, and Producer as needed.
  4. Use Change File if you selected the wrong document (this resets the loaded pdfDoc).
  5. Click Save PDF and wait for Saving….
  6. Download meta_edited_{name}.pdf from your browser.
  7. Optional: re-upload the saved file to confirm the new values stuck.
  8. Repeat for another document with Start Over / Change File.

Tips

  • Keywords must be comma-separated in the form — the PDF stores them as a list.
  • Leaving a field blank does not clear an existing value; enter a replacement string instead.
  • Fix Title so tab titles and PDF library sidebars stop showing the raw filename.
  • Encrypted PDFs fail extraction with Failed to read PDF. It might be encrypted or corrupted.

PDF Metadata Editor FAQ

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Metadata is read and written in the browser with pdf-lib.

Which fields can I edit?

Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer — the standard document info keys.

Why are keywords comma-separated?

The PDF specification stores keywords as an array; the form joins for editing and splits on save.

Can I clear a field by submitting empty?

No — blank/whitespace fields are skipped so you cannot wipe a value by leaving it empty. Enter a new value instead.

What filename do I get?

meta_edited_ plus the original name, for example meta_edited_report.pdf.
